Accommodations (Client Settings & Assigning)

  • Updated

This article describes how accommodations are defined and then assigned to students in ADAM via an accommodation profile. For example, a student may require text-to-speech for math tests but not for ELA tests. Note that most clients currently use only the Default accommodation profile.

Certain accommodations, such as text-to-speech, are available for online testing and others, such as Braille, are paper-based or local accommodations that are noted in the student record. ADAM and TestNav support different accommodations; see the list at the bottom of this page.

In addition to student accommodation profiles, the test must include the appropriate accommodation forms. See Authoring a New Form.

System Client Settings

Admin roles with the appropriate permissions can add or edit the accommodation profiles in Client Settings. A student's accommodations for each profile can then be selected in their student record.

Important: For accommodations to work on a test, the appropriate accommodation profile must be selected in Test Config, and the appropriate accommodations for that profile must be selected in the student record.

  1. Go to System > Client Settings > Accommodations.
  2. In the left column select all accommodations needed in your environment. Select the gear icon to change the accommodation display name and/or add instructions that will appear when teachers or other users activate an accommodation for a student. If the name is changed, the default name will appear crossed out with the new display name next to it.
  3. In the Require Approval column, select the accommodations that need approval from a defined set of roles. For example, for a student to have the Text-To-Speech accommodation turned on, it must be approved by the District Test Coordinator. A notification will appear for the appropriate roles when an accommodation change requires approval. This can be done on the System > Admin Changes page.
  4. In the Limited Editing column, select the accommodations that users will not be able to change if Limited Accommodations Editing is selected for their role in Role Configuration.
  5. Edit an existing accommodation profile or click the Add Profile button to add a new profile that can be used for a type of test, such as ELA or Math.
    • The Default profile contains accommodations as they were defined prior to implementing accommodation profiles and is used by default when creating a test. Most clients currently use only the Default profile.
    • Click the edit icon in the profile column to rename or disable a profile. You can rename the Default profile as well. You can only delete a profile if it has not been used on a test. Disabled profiles are not included in the upload template and cannot be edited on the student record (User Setup).
    • Any accommodation can be made the default profile by dragging it into the first column position. (Click the drag icon at the top of the profile to move it left or right.)
    • All accommodation profiles will be available in the student record, where you can select the appropriate accommodations for that student from each profile.
    • After an accommodation has been assigned to students or tests, its checkbox will be grayed out (it cannot be deselected) to prevent data errors.
  6. After making changes to an accommodation profile (including deletion), click Submit button at the bottom of the page.

Admins Assign Student Accommodations

User roles with the appropriate permissions can assign accommodations to individual students as follows:

  1. Go to Rostering > Users.
  2. Search for the appropriate student, and then click the Edit icon in the Actions column.
  3. On the Accommodations tab, select the appropriate accommodations for each accommodation profile. If a checkbox is grayed out (cannot be selected) that means that it has been selected to be available in another profile in Client Settings but is not available in the current profile.
  4. You can click the Apply to All button to apply the Default accommodation to all profiles.
  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page.

Note: To upload accommodations for multiple students, see Updating Accommodations for Multiple Students.

Teachers View/Assign Student Accommodations

Teachers can view or edit their students' accommodations as follows:

  1. Go to My Classes.
  2. Click a class.
  3. Click the more menu for a student, and then click Accommodations.
  4. You can change the accommodations if you have permission to do so. Click Save after making any changes.

Proctors View/Assign Online Accommodations

Proctors can view student accommodations (for the ADAM player and TestNav) in the Proctor Dashboard by hovering over the accommodations bubble for a student. The number in the bubble indicates the number of accommodations. Proctors can change the Text To Speech accommodation from the Proctor Dashboard if their role has permission.

See Proctoring a Test or Proctoring a TestNav Test.
